About The Book:
Everything is going well for badass Dom, Nash Mage, and his sweet sub, Paul, until Nash does a favor for Rio, the owner of Floggers' BDSM Club.

Expecting Paul to trust him implicitly, Nash's world falls apart when he finds his confused, innocent sub in the arms of his nemesis, Frank. Teetering on the edge of sanity and out of control, Nash is looking for revenge.

The Review:
This quick story of Nash and Paul’s was a great read. In it we get to see the love between the two men. Nash must keep everyone thinking that he is one mean and bad Dom. He can’t let them all see how Paul has his heart. So when he does a favor for Rio he ends up hurting Paul more than he realizes and he must show Paul just how much he really means to Nash.
Nash comes off as big and scary yet we see what a soft spot he has for his sub. Paul is devastated when he finds out Nash has signed a contract with another sub and the hurt he feels is evident. I really loved the play of emotions throughout this story. We get to see strong emotions from both men. Even in the intense scene that the two share, the love that they have for each other shines through. Paul and Nash make a great couple. I enjoyed reading this story and can’t wait to see if we get to read more from these two.

About The Book: Fane Jacobs, or 636, is a genetically and robotically enhanced human, trapped on Terros 9 in 3010 with a psychopathic owner, Gryd. His duty is to entertain Gryd's guests with his skill with the whip and his twin cocks. Denied satisfaction, his dreams are filled with the image of a sweet sub. Cyborgs have no rights on Terros 9. After his friend, Jace, is pack-raped by a group of male guests, Fane and Jace steal a starship, and travel back in time to Earth in 2040. Jace goes looking for a night with the right man, while Fane explores the city. He goes to the aid of a woman being attacked and is shot. The woman resembles the sub from his dreams. What will happen when the woman, Dr. Tamara Bright, discovers his integrated neural matrix and other enhancements on the Bio Scanner? Will she turn away or will she fall for the deliciously, handsome cyborg?

The Review:
This was a wonderful story about love and trust. When Cyborgs Fane and Jace escape from a cruel world they end up on Earth in the year 2040. While out late one night Fane comes across a woman in distress. Tamara a doctor volunteering at a clinic is being attacked. While saving her, Fane is hurt and must trust Tamara to keep his secret.

I was pulled into this story right from the start. Fane and Jace are great men; even though they are cyborgs they still retain their humanity. I enjoyed getting to know both of them and watching the relationship grow between Fane and Tamara.

Tamara is a feisty woman who can and does stand on her own two feet. She proves this when the government takes her in for questioning after finding information on Fane at her clinic. Yet she still yearns to be a submissive and finds herself going to a BDSM club to slack her needs. Little does she know that Fane is a Dom and continues to push him away. Luckily Fane is a man who is willing to fight for what he wants and Tamara’s love is just what he wants. I loved seeing the love grow between Tamara and Fane. The two must learn to trust each other and depend on that trust to get them through alive.

Not only are the main characters a great couple but we also get to meet wonderful secondary characters in this book as well and I hope that they get their own stories. Cyborg Doms: Fane is a great read and I hope a wonderful start to a new series from this author.

The Book: Sabena Darin had the equivalent of a school girl crush on Gavin Brooks, a guy
she worked along side of for the last two years. He was volunteered to be the
office Cupid and pass out the goodies.

As she walked by his office, Sabena saw him bent over retrieving something
that fell to the floor. Her imagination went crazy and she pictured herself
slapping his butt with gusto. Gavin caught her eying him and warned her that
spanking Cupid had consequences.

Despite his warning and with his permission, Sabena gave into her urge. It

wasn’t until later in the day did find out warnings were put in place for a reason.

The Review:
Spanking Cupid was an interesting story. I enjoyed much of the bantering that goes on in this story. Sabena is a strong woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to reach for it. When she finally decides to indulge and play with Gavin her fantasies may become reality. Gavin is a good man who decides to take the matter of Sabena in his own hands, literally. Watching the two reach for their happy ever after was a nice read.
The author does a wonderful job of pulling the reader into the story and kept me entertained all the way to the end. As the title implies, this story does include spanking so if that offends you, you may want to think before reading it. I myself enjoyed this story. I loved seeing a woman who is strong enough to want to explore her needs and wants, as well as a man who is more than willing to help her out.

THE PAGAN & THE PEN BOOK REVIEWS

Title:  All She Wants 4 Christmas
Author: Jessica Lee

Genre: Holiday/Romance/BDSM-m/m/m/f
Length: 28 pgs.

THE BOOK: What if on Christmas Eve all your darkest desires came to life? Could you handle it?

It's Christmas Eve, and all Monica Sims wants is for her fiancé, just once, to step outside his comfort zone. She loves him, and life is fine in their perfectly planned world. But Monica is ready for more. She takes a risk and shares with him her darkest fantasies: Domination. Submission. Surrendering to the will of more than one man. But her confession is more than her straitlaced boyfriend can handle—or so she thought.
Dane knows exactly what he wants in bed: just him and Monica, his fiancée—alone. Simple, easy, vanilla sex was all he ever needed. That was until the night he found his fiancée in her office, watching—enjoying—a very naughty movie on her laptop. Determined to be the one to unleash her control, Dane decides to surprise her on Christmas Eve with a trip to a private fetish club. But they won't be alone.

The Review:
After finding out about her darkest fantasy Dane surprises Monica, his fiancée by making this Christmas one that she will never forget. Their relationship has been on a down slide but when Monica sees how eager Dane is to show her his surprise, she feels that things may be looking up for them and she is pleasantly surprised.
All She Wants 4 Christmas is a great read full of emotion. There may be multiple men in this story but the main focus is the love that is shared between the couple, Monica and Dane. Their love shines right off the pages. Even during the hottest part of the sex scenes we see their love and devotion to each other. Making this more than just a story about sex; it's about love.
Jessica Lee has written a wonderful story about love and trust between a couple. Monica and Dane love one another and want to make each and every dream of the others come true. All She Wants 4 Christmas is a beautifully written love story that should not be missed.

About The Book:
Dominated: Jacqueline dominates her world, all day, every day. When she takes her friend to a fetish club, everyone expects her to be in control. Ethan, the owner of the club, has no time for anything other than work. When Jacqueline stumbles into his office by mistake, however, he teaches her the sensual pleasure which can only come from being dominated.

Fallen: Straitlaced Mandy never does anything wild. She's never even had an orgasm, but when friends take her to a fetish club to celebrate her twenty-fifth birthday, all that will change. Peter may be a buttoned-down market analyst, but he'll show Mandy that corporate and wild can mix very well.

The Review: These were two part of a four part series of short stories. The two stories I read had the exact same first chapter. It threw me off at first, but the rest of the chapters more than made up for the repetition.

Dominated features a submissive woman who finds a hot evening with a male Dom. They don’t know one another beforehand, and they do end it with the promise of a maybe. Ms. Delany does a nice job heating up the place with a hot encounter between strangers. The reader doesn’t need this to develop into something more because this is about Jacqueline finding some bliss. It was a short read, very erotic and very well done.

In Fallen, Ms. Delany did an excellent job of bringing the reader into a fantasy world they may never want to leave. Mandy and Peter are in costume. Neither of them are themselves, and that gives them the freedom to act out a fantasy that will make the reader need a cold shower, a warm body, or a favorite toy afterward. The build-up in Fallen was even better than the rising action in Dominated. I do wish I had the first and fourth stories in the series to make this a complete experience. Luckily, each story is complete and fulfilling. I highly recommend these if you want a high-quality quickie.

Pagan Elements: It’s a little bit of a stretch, but Fallen centers on a scenario where the guy is dressed up like Pan and the woman is dressed up like an angel. It’s more of a role play, completely not meaningful in a Pagan context.

Cover (Rated 1-10): 8- The covers let you know exactly what you’re getting into. They’re attractive and hot.

The Next Move by Lauren Gallagher

Title: The Next Move
Author: Lauren Gallagher
Publisher: Carnal Passions
Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance
Length: 238 pgs.
Other: (light) BDSM, M/F

About The Book: After a quiet evening of chess and wine turns into a sizzling hot night in the bedroom, Christian Bailey and Katrina Morgan think they’ve done irreparable damage to their longstanding friendship. When they sit down to talk things over, though, it isn’t long before they’re in bed again. The sexual chemistry is undeniable, but neither wants to risk their friendship with a relationship, so they agree to a casual arrangement as friends with benefits. The rules are simple: No lying, no strings, and nothing more than friends with benefits.

What they don’t realize is that at least one of those rules may be harder to follow than they thought, and Chris and Kat may very well be putting their friendship in checkmate.

The Review: Friends make the best lovers. This is a recurring theme in Ms. Gallagher’s novels, but she treats it differently each time, so it’s not repetitious.  There’s nothing worse than reading an author’s second book to find out that only the character’s names are different.

From the first page, The Next Move drew me in. Like a game of chess, Chris and Kat move through their developing relationship going through great lengths to hide their next move. It’s a story that’s been done before, so it ultimately comes down to the writer’s skill. Ms. Gallagher delivers realistic, likeable people whose yearning for one another that they won’t admit out loud creates a tension that carries through the entire novel. They are friends first and lovers second. As I read, that old Gloria Loring/Carl Anderson song, Friends and Lovers, played through my head. Chris and Kat learn that they can be both to each other.

My only criticism is that the story seemed to drag on for too long. I understand that neither of them wanted to admit a deeper emotional involvement because it would violate the terms of their agreement, thus ending their affair. The scenes that hop back and forth from Chris to Kat fall short of furthering the tension in the novel because the reader isn’t allowed to stay with one character long enough to feel their pain. As a reader, I felt short-changed because I was looking forward to feeling that pain with Kat, and then I wanted to experience her joy when things finally worked out. Later, when Chris ends the affair and we see only Kat’s side, this happens.

Overall, I liked the novel and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read. I liked the way the metaphor of chess was carried through the entire novel. The sex was hot and erotic, more so as Kat and Chris admitted their feelings for one another to themselves, heightening the emotionality of the scenes. I’m looking forward to reading more from Lauren Gallagher.

Pagan Elements: None

Cover (Rated 1-10): 8-The chess pieces tumbling from the embracing couple catch my eye and make me want to read the book. The come-hither expression on Kat’s face is inviting, but I would have liked to have seen Chris’s eyes.

About The Book: Twenty-year-old Christopher "Kit" Pennington dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. He has the talent and the drive needed for the sport, but finds his lack of interest in formal education barring his way. Under threat from his wealthy father, an important alumnus and contributor at the private Christian college Kit attends, Kit has been barely muddling through. Not until the very handsome Liam Dalton replaces one of Kit’s regular professors at the exclusive school does higher learning take on any real meaning.

The Review:  This is an interesting and very readable story of how a relationship between a college professor and one of his students grows from reflecting the fringe elements of homosexual activity to love and marriage. There are a few flaws in its telling, as well as some unresolved problems or unanswered questions, but they do not distract from the overall narrative. The story sheds light on the more extreme aspects of the homosexual lifestyle [called “The Scene”], which might arouse some readers and turn others off.  However, even straight men, as well as gays and bi-sexuals, may find themselves reacting enjoyably to the erotic, and somewhat graphic nature of the descriptions it offers of homosexual activity.

Among the aspects that reduce the quality of the story, in part because of their limited believability or unresolved nature, is Kit’s use of his father’s credit card to fund his sexual exploits, seemingly without his father ever becoming aware of it; the coincidence of Kit running into Liam in an erotic store in Provincetown days after they first meet; the way the story seeks to resolve Kit’s shaky relationship with his father; Liam’s experience with an anal vibrator while teaching his class; the occasionally unfulfilled promised sexual activity, and the idea that a sexual relationship between teacher and student could actually end up in marriage.

More positively, the way that the story shines light on that part of “The Scene” that includes domination, discipline, ownership of one person by the other, sexual slavery, exhibitionism, physical abuse, and purely physical sex is actually educational for anyone unfamiliar with those practices. This aspect is complex, for while both Liam and Kit are supposedly into these activities, Kit has carefully avoided being dominated, (he is an anal virgin when he meets Liam), while Liam, for all his talk, has very real limits when it comes to these activities. How emotional and physical intimacies interact in the context of this extreme form of homosexuality is not fully resolved, for Liam and Kit move back and forth toward the edge without ever fully engaging in what they say they want.

More details as to how Liam and Kit came to be who they are when they first meet, especially in terms of their sexual interests, might have helped flesh out the story and enabled the reader to understand why in time their growing personal relationship established limits on their sexual activities.

Nevertheless, taken as a whole this is a revealing look into the dynamics of homosexuality, the difficulties and the risks facing those who engage in its more extreme practices, the prejudice that gays encounter, and the steps men take to achieve a loving and committed relationship.

I recommend this story especially to non-gays as a way of gaining an appreciation for the differences and commonalities that exist between straights and homosexuals.

Pagan Elements: None

Cover (Rated 1-10): 3.  The cover is attractive, but this book is not about baseball, which the cover might lead one to believe.  “A Perfect Game” is actually about the interplay of two people exploring a gay relationship, not the national pastime.  I would not be drawn to, much less purchase or read the book based on the cover.

About The Book: No man has ever satisfied Sabrina Breszewski in bed. She doesn’t want a husband, but thanks to her grandfather’s will, she needs one, and soon. Impulsively, she proposes to a stranger in the conference room at the advertising agency for which she works.
Jonas Spencer has been married before. He’s a cynic, but the chance to be with the beautiful, powerful advertising executive is too good to let pass. He accepts Sabrina’s proposal in exchange for the promise of the passion boiling just below the surface, the passion into which she cannot tap.

Layer by layer, he peels away her carefully-constructed façade, helping Sabrina find passion and showing her the power was always hers. As Sabrina falls in love with Jonas, she must confront the lingering shadows of his first marriage. Can she help him let go of the past, or will he use it to throw away the future?

The Review: At the book’s center is the story of two people involved in a BDSM relationship, trying to make it work within the course of their everyday lives. Michele Zurlo has done an excellent job of creating characters that are easily relatable, and desirable. The reader is led through family issues, love, betrayal – but in such a way that every situation, regardless of how implausible it seems, is fun to read.

My one complaint is on Ms. Zurlo’s writing style. It took me awhile to get into the flow of the story, as the first few chapters involve much ‘telling’ – just plainly explaining to the reader the background story and what’s going on, instead of investing words in description and dialogue. The pattern continues through the book, and left me feeling bored in some spots.

However, Ms. Zurlo’s erotic scenes are superb. She combines the sensual with the forbidden, the romantic with the kinky, in such a way that has you panting and ready to find someone to  “play” with. The characters emotions are clearly revealed, and their desires, while not conventional, are definitely  sexy.

All in all, a good read.

About The Book:
Mae Southall is an independent woman who is not above breaking the rules if it suits her. She relies on no one but herself. Sex is fine but on her terms. When she meets the darkly handsome and mysterious Rob, Mae learns that sexual submission has its benefits.

Robert Parker is Mae’s new boss. She just doesn’t realize it yet. He has a few rules of his own. The first one is that he’s in control when it comes to sex. Her mind may be her own but her body is his to do with as he wishes. He requires her total surrender to him.

The Review:
One of the biggest misconceptions about BDSM is that it’s forced upon the submissive. Quite the opposite is true. The submissive always has a choice and control. They’re the ones whose needs dictate what the Dom will and won’t do. Those rules and signals are worked out ahead of time for the safety and pleasure of all involved. This story threw all those norms out the window. Robert doesn’t tell Mae she has a choice until after the sex act is accomplished. Even then, it’s not completely believable, but more like a lame attempt to vindicate his actions. He threatens her with having to endure rape at the hands of a random passing (willing?) man if she doesn’t “suck him off”. As a woman and someone well-versed in the BDSM lifestyle, I was appalled at the conditions under which this story set. Rape is about control. BDSM is about pushing boundaries and fulfilling role-playing fantasies. It’s about trust and sharing.

All good relationships—friendly and sexual—are built on a foundation of respect. Refusing to wear a condom isn’t respectful, no matter what a man’s future intentions are with his partner, especially when he doesn’t make them clear to the partner. The lack of a relationship made Rob’s repetitious use of the term ‘baby’ demeaning, though it was probably meant to be a term of endearment.

The character development contradicted itself. First Rob is thinking he would like something more with Mae, then he gets jealous when the male hooker he paid to ‘play’ with Mae (without her prior knowledge or consent—or a condom) gets frisky with her. The reasoning tends to start like this: “He needed Mae to understand and accept what he had already concluded himself. They were meant for each other, destined to be together.” Then, a few paragraphs later: “He knew she was confused. That was understandable. He was feeling a little the same way.” He either thinks they belong together, he isn’t sure, or he doesn’t think they belong together. Vacillating feelings in the last pages do not an HEA make.

The morning after, he leaves her to wake up alone (did he at least leave cab fare?). Then he has the nerve to explain it by saying he left her to think about how much she needs him? Whether or not she realizes it, she’s a victim. She needs a cop and a therapist.  Margaret Atwell wrote a short story called Rape Fantasies. In it, she alludes to the fact that many women have fantasies of being kidnapped and raped by a handsome stranger. I agree Atwell’s premise that women don’t actually want to be raped. (The main character of that story fantasized about talking rapists out of committing this crime.) They want to be surprised, pleasured, pleased. There is a huge difference between setting up a kidnap/bondage scenario with someone you know and trust, and with being forced into various sex acts by a handsome stranger you don’t know and have no reason to trust.

The author clearly has writing talent. Her style was engaging and her characters were realistic. With more attention to the story’s intended message, this could have been a really good tale.

About The Book: Now that Katie's been collared, she's settling quickly into life with her master, Sam. But she thinks she's ready to expand her experiences and he's quick to help. In fact, Sam has a special gift planned that is sure to delight her, if only she can gather the courage to move beyond the past and accept it without regrets.

The Review: This is easily one of the best BDSM stories I’ve ever read.  I love the way the characters are developed, and the way their relationship is portrayed.  Katie is a real woman, a strong woman who knows what she wants.  Sam is an enviable Dom who makes sure Katie gets what she needs to grow emotionally.  Dena Celeste portrays the D/s relationship in a completely realistic light, including scenes where Sam and Katie do the everyday, mundane things people do in relationships, like have breakfast and discuss their day.  The sex scenes are erotic, sensual, and romantic.  Because it is a short story, we are only treated to glimpses, but it is enough for us to see how completely Sam and Katie love one another.

I’m a sucker for a great love story, and this is definitely one of the best I’ve encountered.  Sam takes care of Katie.  He makes sure she has what she needs, from a chat with a friend to a session in the playroom to help her work past her fear, so that she can successfully pursue the things she wants in life.  I loved that he wasn’t threatened by her attraction to women, that he encouraged her to embrace all the sides of her sexuality without fear, guilt, or regret.  At the end of the day, isn’t that what we all want from a life partner—someone who helps us be a better version of ourselves?

This is the second story by Dena Celeste I’ve read and liked.  I’m definitely a fan, and I’m looking forward to more from her.
